Pebbly Beach February 2011

Ok so the New Year’s resolution toget back to writing my blog hasn’t quite worked out … so here I am at Pebbly Beach with nothing to do except eat, walk, swim and write and so no excuses! (Well it did take me till May to publish!)

We had the hottest night on record before we left Manly. It was 29o in the house at 6.00 am!!! Phew! We quickly checked out our guests from Winchester, made up the room and we were on our way.

Whoo Hoo 5 days of snorkelling and chilling out!

Lots of nostalgic moments as we head through Wollongong finally stopping near Kiama for lunch. As I was driving I had noticed the wind picking up, but nothing prepared me for the shock when we stopped. A southerly changed had hit and it was freezing. The temperature had dropped 10 degrees in 2 hrs! So much for the ice packed Eskies…had I put a sweater in? Unbelievable!

Island View cottage set right on Pebbly Beach was our destination. Down a winding dirt road about 20km from Bateman’s Bay splashing through deep potholes. We have many fond memories of the place as we used to camp here when we were studying at Wollongong Uni. Weekends would be spent writing essays under the shade of the huge gum trees. When it all got too hot we would hurtle ourselves into the breaking waves. The evenings would be spent around a campfire on the beach with the ever watchful eyes of a mob of kangaroos.

The kangaroos are still there and so too is the sense of peace and timelessness. Once we had made up the bed with 4, yes 4 blankets we settled in to the sound of the ocean and the gentle hiss of the gas lighting. Took a day before we could try out the bush shower!
